The research group is dedicated to integrating fundamental research with gene editing technologies to develop biotechnologies that safeguard human health. The team focuses on pioneering original gene editing technologies and establishing gene editing systems with independent intellectual property rights in China, with a particular emphasis on prime editing. Prime editing enables all types of single-base conversions, facilitates arbitrary editing of small DNA fragments, and can be combined with recombinases to achieve large-scale edits, including chromosome editing. To address current bottlenecks in crop breeding, the group is committed to developing "obligate apomixis" in crops, where both embryos and endosperm are completely independent of pollen fertilization, thereby resolving challenges in hybrid seed production. Additionally, the team is working on apomixis-based breeding technologies for crops that are currently difficult to improve through hybridization. For vegetatively propagated crops, the aim is to convert them into apomixis-based, virus-free clonal seed propagation systems, revolutionizing agricultural practices and enabling automated production.
