Lei Zhang obtained his PhD in Microbiology from Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU) in 2013. Afterwards he worked successively as Postdoctoral Fellow and Researcher V at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in Prof. Michael Niederweis’ lab from 2014 to 2022. In 2023 February, he joined HZAU College of Veterinary Medicine as an Associate Professor. The Zhang laboratory is focused on understanding the pathogensis of tuberculosis (TB) which remains the leading cause of infectious diseases related deaths worldwide due to a single bacterial pathogen by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). The research directions include: (i) the metabolism and pathogenic mechanisms of the pathogenic mycobacteria; (ii) drug target discovery and new drug design; (iii) new vaccine against tuberculosis.
