Dr. Zhao Shuhong, is a second-grade professor in Huazhong Agricultural University, Ph.D candidate supervisor, adjuck professor of Murdoch University, Australia. She is a member of the 7th and 8th disciplinary review panel of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council (animal husbandry), member of the 8th Advisory Committee of the Department of Life Sciences of the National Natural Science Foundation of the People's Republic of China, scientist of the whole genome selection post of the National Pig System, and scholar of the Tang Foundation of Cornell University of the United States. He is currently the dean of the School of Animal Science and Technology-School of Animal Medicine of Huazhong Agricultural University, and concurrently serves as the director of the National Livestock Engineering and Technology Research Center, the director of the key laboratory of the Ministry of Agricultural Animal Genetic Breeding and Reproduction Education, and the executive deputy director of the Breeding Pig Quality Supervision and Inspection and Test Center (Wuhan) of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Her research is in the areas of genomic breeding, with a focus on the development of statistical genetics algorithms, multi-omics knowledgebase, intelligent phenomics techniques and the applications in pig breeding as well as other livestock animals. Her research has spanned several areas. She has conducted pioneering work in porcine functional genomics, such as genomics and transcriptomics of porcine muscle growth, identification of regulatory elements at whole genomewide level. Her work led to the identification of a number of single nucleotide polymorphisms in genes that were found to be associated with meat production traits. Her group also developed the first CRISPR / Cas9 library to screen genes related to viral infection. Through collaboration with breeding companies, her group has developed genome selection methods and software. The long-term goal of her research is to improve meat production efficiency through genome selection and genome editing approach. Dr. Zhao is recognized as an international expert in her field, which was exemplified by her invitation to Co-Chair of the world's largest plant and animal genome (PAG) conference organizing committee (2009-2011) and PAG Asia. Dr. Zhao has earned numerous awards, including being selected as a National Outstanding Young Women Scientist. She has published more than 200 papers in Nature Communications, Nature Biotechnology, etc. She also serves as the Dean of the College of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine at Huazhong Agricultural University in Wuhan, P.R. China.
