Dr. Zhengcong Wang is an Associate Professor at the College of Economics and Management, Huazhong Agricultural University. He also serves as an expert for the World Health Organization (WHO) Joint External Evaluation (JEE), and has long been involved in technical assessment and advisory work in the fields of food safety, public health surveillance, and chemical contamination events. He is an Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports, a journal under the Nature Portfolio.、
He has led research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and international collaborative funding schemes, and has also participated in a number of major domestic and international research programs, including Major Projects of the National Social Science Foundation of China, strategic research and consulting projects of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the EU Horizon Programme. His research focuses on big data- and artificial intelligence-driven risk management and health economics in food systems, covering areas such as contaminant risk prediction, foodborne disease early warning, food safety regulation, and optimization of resource allocation.
As the Chinese lead, he has worked with international collaborators to establish the Global Intelligence Food Safety Monitoring Platform (Big Data). In recent years, his research has been published in leading international journals in food safety and risk governance, including Risk Analysis, Journal of Hazardous Materials, iScience, Food Chemistry, and Food Research International. He has also long provided intelligent decision-support services in food safety to market regulatory authorities at different levels, the China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment, as well as domestic and international food enterprises. He has applied for two patents, contributed to the development of one national standard, and his AI-based application models have been adopted as major reference models for national food safety monitoring by regulatory agencies such as Food Standards Scotland (FSS) and the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).

He received his Bachelor’s degree in Food Quality and Safety from Huazhong Agricultural University in 2014.
He received his Master’s degree in Food Supply Chain Safety Management from Wageningen University, the Netherlands, in 2016.
In 2017, he worked as a Research Assistant at RIKILT Wageningen Food Safety Research, the Netherlands.
He received his PhD in Food Safety Management and Health Economics from Wageningen University in 2021.
From 2018 to 2022, he served as an External Researcher at Wageningen Food Safety Research.
